Becca spoke to us today about Black leaders and, particularly, Dr Cornel West.  Cornel West is a Professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice at Union Theological Seminary and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. He has also taught at Yale, Harvard, and the University of Paris.
Dr. West speaks of social justice, courage, and integrity.  He asks: How shall integrity face oppression?  We live in a day when lies are told everywhere (his actual quote was “mendacity is ubiquitous.”)  To be committed to integrity makes you a radical in a world of mendacity.  Mega-churches don’t demonstrate that they have mega-courage.  They do not seek mega-justice.  They seem instead to be practicing a “chamber of commerce” religion.

He said “integrity is the quality of your courage.”  Commit yourself to institutional intellectual integrity.  And, he said: be transgressive.  Truth is a two edge sword.  Try.  Fail?  Try again, fail again.  Try to fail just a little bit better next time.  Integrity is not success, but rather integrity is the pursuit of truth across a long arc.  Justice is what love looks like in public.
