Phil Hart from the Society of Friends spoke to us today about the experience his church has had in providing sanctuary to a woman in danger of being deported by ICE.  Its a complicated story as well as a very simple one.  The points to remember are that she has been a law abiding, tax paying, employed member of our American society for the past two decades with children.  The law is not on her side, but as a productive member of society, it does harm to the nation by splitting up her family (the rest of her family are citizens) and deporting her.  This was her story.

"The quality of mercy" is a quote by Portia in William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice; it occurs during Act IV, Scene 1, set in a Venetian Court of Justice. It is the speech in which Portia begs Shylock for mercy"And earthly power doth then show likest God’s When mercy seasons justice."
