Today, as we often do on major holidays, we talk about the human side of the holiday tradition, the people who have meant so much to us in the past and our Easter memories.  The traditions come from so many unusual places… distinctly un-Christian places.   Rabbits and eggs come from Roman traditions not Christian ones.  The Christian bible is quite silent on the subject of rabbits in general and the rabbits in relationship to eggs in particular.

Easter traditions in Eastern Europe are all about the food and the flowers… about life and re-birth.  Japanese symbolism tradition says that the cherry blossom represents the human soul.  The cherry blossoms represent blossoming of human souls.  Some people in the congregation remembered that Easter was a sad time when she was growing up because the church was so sad and mournful.  But, she remembered, we got new clothes.

Littany of Spring
by Addae Ama Kraba

As we gather to celebrate
In this time of beginnings
In the season of birth and rebirth,
We hear the heart beat of Mother Earth

With the spring time comes the blossoming of the plants
A time of exploration and creation
And the emerging patterns of life
We hear the heart beat of Mother Earth

Let us draw closer to each other and our creator
In this the time of reflection and growth
In the continuing circle of life
We hear the heart beat of Mother Earth

We recognize strengths and struggles in community
We give thanks for gifts of kindness and understanding
And our emotions with the spirit
We hear the heart beat of Mother Earth

Let us remember past and present
And the start of the week we begin anew
Let us share laughter, love and joy
We hear the heart beat of Mother Earth
